    Seek His Righteousness

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33

What makes this verse of scripture so important is that we find it in what is known as Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which He spoke to the disciples and the multitudes. This sermon covers Matthew chapters five through seven. Chapter six is right in the middle of Jesus’ discourse.

This verse is important because it contains a promise. The promise is that the Lord will provide everything that we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.) As Believers, our primary responsibility is to make disciples. You see, only disciples can beget or make disciples in the same way as only sheep can beget sheep. It is easy to lose sight of our primary ministry with all of the challenges and responsibilities of life. Our motto must be to “keep first things first”!

We must be disciples who train others to become disciples. The “Mission Statement” of the church I pastored was and still is “To win the Lost, Train them up, and send them out!” You see, making disciples Is not just a practical thing to do to expand the Body of Christ, but Jesus makes it very clear in each of the Gospels that we are to make disciples. In other words, we are commanded to make disciples. Evangelism is not an option. Show More

I’ve been talking about the discipleship pattern that the Lord Jesus Christ has left for us to follow. As I said in my last message, Jesus tells us what to do, then He shows us what to do, and finally He sends us out to do it.

First, Jesus tells us in John 3 that we must be Born-again, that is accepting the salvation He offers as a free gift, Ephesians 2:8-9, “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Implicit is the Holy Spirit of God coming to live in us. This Jesus did at his water baptism by John the Baptist. The Spirit descending upon Jesus like a dove and filled Him. As Believers, we receive the Holy Spirit when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Show More

    Purpose – Holy Spirit Power

    Introduction

In the last few posts/episodes, we’ve been talking about finding your purpose in God and using Jesus’ life as a pattern for finding our purpose.

    Review

As I said in my last post when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, the Scriptures clearly state that Heaven was opened, and the Spirit came down like a dove. What is important to realize is that Heaven was open because the Holy Spirit came down. In Jesus’s case, the Holy Spirit came down upon him. In our case, when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior the Holy Spirit comes to live in us. This means that we live under an open heaven just as Jesus did! By the phrase “open heaven,” I mean we have access to the Lord, and fellowship and communication is available to us.

Unfortunately, many Christians live under the impression that Heaven is closed. Nothing could be further from the truth. We may be unaware that Heaven is open, but nevertheless, Heaven is available to us because of the Holy Spirit in us. There is a direct connection between the Lord in Heaven and the Holy Spirit living in us, for they are One.

Jesus makes this “open heaven” clear when He encountered Nathaniel in John 1:51, He said the following, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” The word angel means messenger; communications were open between the Father and Jesus. In the same way, communication is open between the Father and the Believer.Show More

I can think of no better way to find, understand, and fulfill our purpose than to look at Jesus’ life as the pattern. I see three essential areas as important “faith” issues that Jesus experienced, and as disciples of Jesus Christ, we should experience also.

The three encounters Jesus faced before He entered into His ministry.

These three encounters parallel what a disciple of Jesus Christ must experience. Show More
